Short Documentary Portrait Video Project

A short peek into an aspect of Alexi's world as an artist. He reveals how becoming a father has changed him as he reflects on the past and looks to the future.

Behind the camera:

I throughly enjoyed interviewing Alexi for this piece. It's not often that I get to sit down with somebody and have a conversation with them while the camera is rolling. I also had fun with the post production editing - this involved selecting sections of Alexi's songs that would slot onto the timeline in the 'right' places.

Prior to the shoot I briefed Alexi on the rough topics of questioning but I didn't reveal any questions in detail before hand because I wanted to get a 'natural' free flowing response from him, I think that this particular strategy worked out well in this instance.

Difficulties:

The most difficult thing that I faced during the shoot was definitely keeping an eye on the lighting conditions that were continuously changing outside which required me to alter my camera settings accordingly. Essentially here we were chasing the sun as I wanted to shoot the interview with the softest light possible. We waited until golden hour when the sun was coming down from behind the clouds. The cool thing about this session was that the clouds were like a really big softbox in comparison to the bare sun (earlier on in the day - see images below) that was casting very crisp shadows on Alexi's face.

Access & Reflection:

Im thankful that Alexi allowed me access into his home for the day so that I was able to candidly capture him in his environment. Even though I think it's a very difficult feat to capture the whole of someones essence on camera, I think that I've captured an aspect of Alexi's essence through the medium of video.
