American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux (1884-1951), director and producer of over 40 films and 7 novels. Was believed to be the first African-American to make a film, the Homesteader. Oscar’s seminal work was 'Within Our Gates', 1920. A black & white silent film believed to be a response to DW Griffiths Birth of A Nation.
